A school teacher from radical Muslim group (Huzb ut-Tahrir), Reem Allouche, demonstrated at a meeting in Sydney, Australia, how husbands can hit wives with a stick (practice called sivaak). The women from the group say it is fine for wives to be beaten by husbands for it promotes tranquility. Co-panelist, Atika Hatifi, also okayed violence saying it is a 'beautiful blessing'. She added that cheating wives can be beaten, but those who refuse to cook shouldn't.
During the 30-minute discussion -the two described beating wives as a 'symbolic act'- and men (according to the sect take the leadership position in the home) are allowed to hit disobedient wives with sticks.
Besides 'sivaak', other agreeable ways to discipline or punish women include using a twisted scarf or piece of fabric.
The women agree that they should be beaten if they are caught 'commiting sin' for it is a serious offence against Allah or their husbands.
However in another story, Islamic leader Keysar Trad apologised on the weekend for saying hitting women was 'last resort' admitting to Sky News presenter Andrew Bold, that he made a 'slip up'.
